Dentures can help improve appearance and function, allowing patients to eat and speak properly. The first week experience with new dentures can be hard as they feel different from natural teeth and without proper care they may rub and irritate gums. You’ll have to learn how to keep them in place, smile, speak, eat, and drink while wearing dentures. New dentures will require your patience to get adjusted to them. Here are some tips on how to get yourself adjusted in your new denture:

  • Practice speaking- When adjusting to new dentures you’ll likely have a difficult time speaking at first. Your new dentures may feel strange, but practice will make you perfect until you have become accustomed to talking with dentures. To get used to your dentures, practice speaking on your own time. Tongue twisters and singing can happen to be a great way to start and with practice, you’ll be able to speak comfortably with your new dentures in no time.
  • Start by eating soft foods- It’s good to start out with soft foods for the first few days after getting the dentures. Avoid Chewy foods such as steak and other red meats for some time as it may take some getting used to, especially when you’re new to artificial teeth. Try eating softer foods such as bananas, mashed potatoes or cooked vegetables that will be gentle on your gums. Your jaw muscles will get used to chewing food again after some time, and you’ll have an easier time when chewing more difficult foods.
  • Remove your dentures- Depending on the  denture types, if you have removable dentures then take them out about four hours or so for the first week. This allows your gums, cheeks, and jaw a break and also relieves them of the constant pressures of chewing. Your dentist will provide you with some aftercare guidelines on how long to wear and remove your dentures at first. Following this schedule will prevent sores or irritation in your mouth. Remove dentures at night if they are not implant-supported and place them in a glass of water or mild cleaning solution.
  • Try the best adhesives for a better fit- For dentures that are not implant-supported it may seem to be slipping slightly, using the proper adhesive will make all the difference. Your dentist may recommend adhesives that will feel best to you. Proper adhesive could go a long way when getting used to dentures quickly.
  • Call your dentist- If you are still struggling with how your dentures feel even if you have followed guidelines then feel free to contact your dentist. Sometimes the help of a professional can quickly identify and solve the underlying issues rather than trying to figure out yourself. Additionally, as your dentures and gums are adapting, generally dentures adjustment may be necessary.
